Matthew Smith, 21, of Hauppauge, was sentenced to 7â…“ to 22 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing a fatal drunk-driving crash that killed Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa and injured his passenger. The crash occurred in January 2026 when Smith, intoxicated and driving over 70 mph through a red light, collided with Espinosa’s vehicle while she was en route to work. Smith’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, and he was found with alcohol in his vehicle. He also forfeited his truck as part of the plea.
