Union Busting Mayor Svante Myrick of Ithaca wants to be the first Mayor in NY State to Abolish the Police. He is attempting to replace the city’s police department with a “Department of Community Solutions and Public Safety” which would include armed “public safety workers” and unarmed “community solution workers,”. All current officers would have to re-apply for a position within the new department.
This is Union busting 101. Firing workers and offering them their jobs back at lower wages, with reduced rights and benefits is as about as anti-labor as you can get. Not only would it cripple public safety just like defunding the police did in Portland but it would also open the door for similar tactics to be used against teachers, firefighters, and other public workers.
Ithaca PBA has requested anyone who spends significant time in Ithaca, to speak out. Whether you travel there for business, pleasure, or send your children to school there Ithaca City council needs to know public safety should not be sacrificed in order to help Mayor Myrick break a Union.
