The Suffolk County PBA mourns the loss of retired Deputy Chief of Detectives Donna Engel, who passed away at age 70 on July 22.
Deputy Chief Engel started her career as a stenographer in 1971 and became a police officer in 1982. She was promoted to sergeant in 1988, lieutenant in 1995, and captain in 1999. In 2000, she advanced to Deputy Inspector and became Deputy Chief of Patrol in 2005—the first woman in the department’s history to achieve this rank.
Her late husband, Thomas Engel, retired as a sergeant in the Sixth Precinct in 1987.
After an illustrious career, Deputy Chief Engel retired as Deputy Chief of Detectives on February 19, 2009. Her legacy of service to Suffolk County will not be forgotten.
