Richard L. Wolffe, Jr., a 39-year-old man from Bay Shore, New York, was indicted for possessing over 5,000 images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, some as young as infants. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the indictment, emphasizing the severity of such crimes and criticizing the current laws that prevent prosecutors from asking for bail in these cases.
The investigation began in August 2022 after a tip suggested Wolffe had uploaded child sexual abuse material to cloud storage. Law enforcement executed a search warrant at his residence on July 27, 2023, where they discovered multiple electronic devices containing the abusive material. Wolffe was arrested on August 23, 2023.
On November 14, 2024, Wolffe was arraigned with 20 counts of possession of a sexual performance by a child, facing a potential prison sentence of 1 1/3 to 4 years if convicted. He is currently out on supervised release as the charges are non-bail eligible under New York State law. Wolffe is scheduled to return to court on December 20, 2024, and is represented by attorney Peter Brill. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Joseph Mallek, with the investigation carried out by Suffolk County Police's Digital Forensics Unit.
