NYPD black & blue: NYC cops suffered record-breaking number of injuries in 2024
Dec 30, 2024

In the first nine months of 2024, the NYPD recorded a historic 4,600 injuries sustained by officers due to violent encounters, marking a 13% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023. This figure is also 60% higher than the 2,886 injuries logged in 2021. The period saw a peak in officer injuries between April and June, with 1,640 reported injuries—the highest for any quarter since record-keeping began in 2016.

Major contributors to the rise in injuries are attributed to a surge in violent interactions involving individuals with criminal backgrounds, especially among recent migrants. Approximately 8% of NYC’s nearly 759,000 illegal migrants are reported to have prior convictions or pending charges. Officers have cited that assaults on police by migrants are notably higher than those by regular citizens.

Incidents of violence against officers include various attacks, with examples like an officer punched by a repeat offender and another officer injured during a brawl involving multiple migrants. Critics attribute the increase in assaults to lenient legal consequences for offenders, with calls for reform highlighting the role of bail reform and the judiciary's approach towards violent crimes.

Overall, the data indicates a significant uptick in violence and injuries involving both police officers and suspects, raising concerns about public safety and the overall effectiveness of the city’s law enforcement strategies amid alleged procedural leniency.
