Munim Raghid, a 26-year-old resident of Ronkonkoma, was arrested on January 2, 2025, for animal cruelty and contempt of court after being found in possession of three Kangal Shepherds, including two puppies, despite a court order prohibiting him from having any animals due to previous animal cruelty charges. The case began when a Good Samaritan discovered a severely injured puppy in the road on New Year’s Eve and took it to a veterinary hospital. Raghid allegedly attempted to retrieve the puppy from the hospital against medical advice.

Following this incident, investigators from the District Attorney's Biological, Environmental, and Animal Safety Team (BEAST) conducted a search warrant at Raghid’s home, where they seized the animals; one puppy was found with significant injuries that require extensive surgery. Raghid faces one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty for neglecting the puppy and four counts of criminal contempt for violating the court order. The puppies are now available for adoption through the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter. The Fund for Animal Cruelty Treatment of Suffolk, Inc. (FACTS) has committed to helping with the injured puppy's veterinary care.
