Adriano Abreu Bonifacio, a 39-year-old man from Deer Park, was indicted by the Suffolk County District Attorney for possessing five kilograms of fentanyl, a quantity capable of killing over 2.5 million people. The indictment includes charges of Operating as a Major Trafficker and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree, both Class A-1 felonies. The investigation began when a suspicious package, shipped from Paramount, California, was flagged by law enforcement and later identified as containing fentanyl.
On December 18, 2024, an undercover officer delivered the package to Bonifacio, who claimed to be acting on behalf of someone named "Miguel Perez," a fictitious recipient. Bonifacio was arrested after accepting the package. He faces a potential prison sentence of 15 years to life if convicted. As of February 5, 2025, he was arraigned and held on a substantial bail. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Lauren Golombek and involves multiple law enforcement agencies. Bonifacio’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 13, 2025.
