Thirteen alleged gang members, associated with the Hempstead/Freeport "5-L" or "CC Boyz," have been indicted for a scheme involving vehicle theft and credit card fraud in Suffolk County, New York, from February 2023 to August 2024. The group is accused of breaking into 52 vehicles, stealing 15 and taking 75 credit cards, which were then used for over $40,000 in fraudulent purchases at various retail stores.
The investigation, led by the Suffolk County Police Department and the District Attorney’s Gang Task Force, revealed that these individuals targeted specific neighborhoods and locations such as residential driveways, gyms, hotels, and assisted living facilities using real estate apps to find opportunities. They were involved in a practice called "car-checking," committing thefts late at night or early in the morning and often switching license plates to avoid detection.
Significant evidence was collected through surveillance footage and search warrants, leading to the recovery of numerous stolen items, including cell phones, credit cards, and firearms.
Among the defendants, Shawn Mullen, 24, faces the most serious charges, including Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, with bail set at $1 million. Others, like Trevon Brandon-Douse and Zion Fenner, are also facing serious felony charges, while some defendants are in custody on unrelated matters or remain at large.
The indictment reflects a coordinated effort by law enforcement to tackle organized crime, particularly emphasizing its impact on community safety and property crime's serious nature. The prosecution is spearheaded by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, with contributions from various law enforcement agencies, including the United States Postal Inspection Service.
