Matthew Smith, 20, of Hauppauge, was indicted for causing a fatal crash that killed Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa and seriously injured his passenger. Smith allegedly ran a red light while intoxicated, crashing into Espinosa’s vehicle on January 31, 2026. Espinosa was pronounced dead at the scene, and her colleague was injured with severe injuries. Smith faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and assault, and was ordered held without bail. He is scheduled for court on April 20, 2026, and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
