TOWN OF EAST HAMPTON EMPLOYEES INDICTED FOR RECEIVING BRIBES

Evelyn Calderon and Ryan Benitez, employees of the East Hampton Town Building Department, were indicted for accepting cash bribes in 2024 in exchange for issuing building permits and Certificates of Occupancy more quickly. Calderon would prioritize bribe-paying contractors’ applications and split the bribe with Benitez, who would then expedite inspections and permit issuance. Both surrendered to authorities on April 2, 2026, and face charges that could result in 2 to 7 years in prison if convicted. They are scheduled to return to court on May 21, 2026.
