SALVADORAN MAN SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR KILLING HOUSEMATE

Darwin Josue Maldonado Vanegas, a Salvadoran resident, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after being convicted of murdering his housemate, Daniel Nunez-Hernandez, in April 2025. The victim was shot in their shared home in Bay Shore. Maldonado Vanegas fled after the crime but was captured in Miami in May 2025. He was found guilty of second-degree murder and weapons charges in March 2026. Federal authorities plan to seek his deportation after serving his sentence.
