Remembering the life of Sergeant Lawrence Devine

Yesterday, August 22nd, we took some time to honor the life and memory of Suffolk County Police Sergeant Lawrence Devine, who was taken from us on this day in 1981. While on duty in 1966, Sergeant Devine responded to a domestic call and upon arriving, he was met with heavy gunfire from the male perpetrator and received multiple gunshot wounds to his spine, thus paralyzing him. With his incredible resilience, Sergeant Devine was able to return to work in the Communications Section in 1969. Unfortunately, Sergeant Devine had to step away from the department in 1971 and tragically passed in 1981 from the injuries he sustained in the 1966 shooting he responded to. On behalf of all members of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, we pay tribute to the bravery and determination of Sergeant Devine and remember his sacrifice to our department and to the residents of Suffolk County.
