A True Veteran!
Aug 26, 2021

SCPD Headquarters was graced with a true veteran of the Department this week.

Retired Suffolk County Police Officer Charlie Winter stopped by to visit the newly renovated police museum. Charlie, who turned 95 on Monday, brought his wife Alice to show her his old haunts. Acting Police Commissioner Stuart Cameron came by to offer his gratitude to both Charlie, and Alice, who served in the United States Army Missile Command.

Charlie regaled the Commissioner with tales from World War II, where he suffered a fractured skull and a leg injury. Though he still carries the scar from war, he was able to become a founding member of the SCPD Highway Unit. Charlie started his law enforcement career in the Lloyd Harbor Police Department in 1951, became a member of the SCPD when the department formed in 1960, and retired in 1972.

While you might think his biggest victories are surviving WW II and being a founding member of the department, Charlie said his biggest thrill came just eight years ago when he married Alice. Alice says they go dancing every week, but emphasized they don’t dance to slow songs.

Happy birthday and thanks for stopping by!
