Javesh Persaud, a 34-year-old man from Shirley, New York, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to sex trafficking and related offenses. He lured an 18-year-old woman, who was experiencing homelessness, to Suffolk County under the pretense of providing shelter, then forced her to engage in sexual acts with others for money, which he kept.
The victim contacted the National Human Trafficking hotline for help, prompting an investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department's Human Trafficking Investigations Unit. Persaud was arrested shortly thereafter. His charges included multiple counts of sex trafficking and promoting prostitution, with a total of six felonies.
District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney emphasized that Persaud's actions exploited a vulnerable individual and underscored the commitment to combatting human trafficking in Suffolk County. The case was handled by Assistant District Attorney Veronica McMahon and the police detectives John Paul O’Connor and Joseph Collins.
Victims of trafficking and suspicious activities can report them to local authorities or national hotlines for assistance.
