James Carr, a 35-year-old man from Lake Grove, New York, has been found guilty of assault and drug possession charges related to the near-fatal overdose of his 11-month-old child due to fentanyl exposure. The incident occurred on January 13, 2024, when emergency responders found the infant in a critical condition. After administering Narcan, the child was stabilized and diagnosed with acute fentanyl poisoning.
Investigators discovered that Carr had purchased narcotics from co-defendant Robert Mauro, who previously pleaded guilty to charges related to another fatal overdose involving a 33-year-old woman. Evidence revealed that Mauro had sold Carr drugs known to be dangerous, and both men had been in communication prior to the poisoning.
Carr was arrested on the same day as the overdose, with police finding drugs and paraphernalia at his home. He was subsequently found guilty of Assault in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Carr now faces a potential sentence of two to seven years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for March 31, 2025. This case is part of a broader effort by the Suffolk County District Attorney's office to combat the fentanyl crisis and hold drug dealers accountable.
