Joshua Guzman, a 30-year-old man from East Patchogue, New York, has been indicted for selling carfentanil that allegedly resulted in a fatal overdose of a 27-year-old victim. This indictment comes while Guzman already faces other drug charges, pending in court.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney expressed concern over Guzman’s involvement in drug trafficking just days before he was accepted into a Judicial Diversion Program aimed at reforming defendants with substance use disorders. The program is controversial, especially for individuals accused of trafficking deadly substances.
Investigations revealed Guzman's criminal activities, including a surveillance operation where he unsuccessfully attempted to flee from police. He was found in possession of fentanyl, cocaine, and a stun gun. Guzman had multiple sales of fentanyl and cocaine to undercover officers prior to the fatal overdose incident, where he sold carfentanil, which is significantly stronger than fentanyl.
Following the investigation, Guzman was arrested in March 2025 and faces charges for criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance in connection to the overdose. If convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 2025, while he remains in custody with a substantial bail set.
The case highlights ongoing issues related to drug trafficking and public safety concerns in Suffolk County.
