Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office (SCDA) has been readmitted to the federal Equitable Sharing Program, which had been suspended in September 2020 due to a federal investigation related to previous administrations. With the support of Congressmen Andrew Garbarino and Nick LaLota, the SCDA expects to receive approximately $13 million in funding to enhance law enforcement capabilities.
The suspension, initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Treasury Department, stemmed from a subpoena received by former DA Timothy D. Sini that investigated the use of forfeiture funds. After the investigation was resolved in early 2025, the SCDA applied for renewed participation in the funding programs.
District Attorney Tierney emphasized that the restored funding is essential for public safety and will be allocated for prosecuting serious crimes, including the Gilgo Homicide case, combating fentanyl trafficking, and addressing gang violence. Congressman Garbarino highlighted the importance of these resources for effective law enforcement, while Congressman LaLota reaffirmed the need for accountability and support for local law enforcement.
Overall, the readmission to the Equitable Sharing Programs is seen as a significant step toward enhancing the safety and effectiveness of law enforcement in Suffolk County.
