LAKE GROVE MAN SENTENCED TO 5 1/2 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER NARCOTIC PURCHASE IS LINKED TO THE NEAR- DEATH OVERDOSE OF HIS INFANT CHILD
Apr 09, 2025

James Carr, a 36-year-old man from Lake Grove, New York, was sentenced to 5 and a half years in prison and one year of post-release supervision after being convicted of causing his 11-month-old infant's near-fatal overdose due to acute fentanyl poisoning. The incident occurred on January 13, 2024, when emergency responders found the infant unresponsive and blue, requiring immediate medical intervention. Narcan was administered, successfully reviving the child, who was later diagnosed with fentanyl poisoning and other respiratory issues.

Investigators found illegal drugs, including fentanyl and cocaine, during a search of Carr’s residence. Carr had been purchasing narcotics from dealer Robert Mauro, who was separately convicted and sentenced to 5 to 15 years for manslaughter related to another overdose case. Carr was found guilty of assault and drug possession in February 2025, highlighting the ongoing opioid crisis and the push for legislative changes to address drug-related harm.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney emphasized the need for enhanced penalties for drug dealers to prevent such instances of child endangerment.
