In a notable conflict on Long Island, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney has criticized District Court Judge John Zollo for releasing two felony defendants—one accused of child sex abuse and the other of gun possession—without requiring bail.
In the first case, a Brentwood man, who was already out on bail for another gun charge, was arrested for posting videos with firearms on social media. Despite prosecutors requesting a $250,000 bail, Judge Zollo released him on his own recognizance.
In the second case, a father accused of repeatedly sexually abusing his 8-year-old daughter was extradited from Orange County. Prosecutors sought $150,000 cash bail and a protective order for the victim, but again, Judge Zollo released the defendant without bail.
Tierney criticized New York's 2019 bail reform legislation, arguing that it undermines public safety and allows potential flight risks to be released without financial security. He called for lawmakers to reassess this policy to prevent further risks to the community.
