George Hackett, 54, of Wading River, was sentenced to 8 to 16 years in prison for causing a fatal high-speed crash on Sunrise Highway in East Quogue in June 2023, which resulted in the death of 82-year-old Franklin Blake. Hackett, who was under the influence of THC and Xanax while driving at speeds up to 113 mph, fled the scene after the collision. He was found walking miles away from the crash site. Hackett had a prior criminal record, including multiple DWI convictions and a parole for Assault in the First Degree. In March 2025, he pleaded guilty to charges including Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, Manslaughter, Leaving the Scene, Assault, and Driving While Impaired. The court sentenced him to 8 to 16 years, with the District Attorney's Office recommending a longer sentence. The case was prosecuted by Suffolk County DA’s Office, emphasizing the severity of reckless driving and driving under influence.
