GUATEMALAN MAN INDICTED FOR TWO UNPROVOKED STABBINGS IN RIVERHEAD

A 23-year-old Guatemalan man, Rene Alexander Elias Chaj, has been indicted in Suffolk County, NY, for unprovoked stabbings of two men in Riverhead within an hour. The first stabbing occurred around 3:15 p.m. on May 2, 2025, at a deli, injuring a man in the left side. Afterwards, Elias Chaj boarded a bus and, about three minutes later, stabbed a second man on the bus, puncturing his lung. He fled on foot but was quickly arrested nearby, with police finding cocaine on him. He faces multiple charges, including second-degree assault and weapon possession, and could face up to 14 years in prison if convicted. He was arraigned on May 16 and is scheduled to return to court on June 4. The case is being prosecuted by the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.
