Suffolk County DA Tierney Launches Enhanced Maritime Safety Initiative
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the East End Marine Law Enforcement Task Force, announced the launch of Aqua Alert, a new pilot program designed to improve maritime law enforcement and emergency response on eastern Suffolk County waterways. Modeled after Amber and Silver Alerts, Aqua Alert will send real-time notifications about urgent maritime emergencies via mobile devices, helping authorities respond swiftly and gather critical information.
The program aims to increase safety during the Memorial Day weekend and summer, emphasizing enforcement of boating laws such as operating under the influence, safety equipment requirements, and proper navigation. This comes alongside increased enforcement efforts, especially considering that a large percentage of boating fatalities involve drownings and unwearied life jackets.
Additionally, as of January 2025, all boat operators in New York State must complete a safety course under Brianna’s Law. The initiative involves multiple agencies working together to promote safety, enforce laws, and respond effectively to emergencies and illegal activities on the water.
