James Brown, a 45-year-old from Mastic and a prior violent offender, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder for fatally shooting his longtime friend, Umar Elquhir, in November 2023. The shooting occurred after an earlier altercation, with Brown firing multiple shots into the victim’s car. Brown was convicted in May 2025 and previously served five years for an earlier assault conviction.
