NY Democrats blast, Republicans support, Executive Order on bail reform
Aug 26, 2025

President Donald Trump issued an executive order targeting jurisdictions, including New York, that have implemented bail reform laws, which could lead to suspension of federal funds. New York's bail reform, passed in 2019 and expanded in 2023, eliminated cash bail for many crimes and increased judicial discretion. While some law enforcement officials blame bail reform for rising crime, statistics show no link between the reforms and crime increases. State leaders, including Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Governor Hochul, criticized the order, arguing it misrepresents New York’s laws and safety improvements. Republicans, like Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and Assemblyman Chris Tague, support the order, criticizing Democratic policies for contributing to crime. Hochul’s administration highlighted data showing a decrease in rearrests since bail law changes, asserting that reforms have kept communities safer.
