Another Job Well Done by our Marine Bureau!
Aug 23, 2021

It was supposed to be a nice ride on the Long Island Sound, but that changed when Douglas Gordon’s personal watercraft became disabled and he was stranded for three hours before being rescued by Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers.

Gordon, who was approximately 3⁄4 of a mile from shore in Rocky Point, attempted to swim to shore but did not get far. Gordon’s friend called the United States Coast Guard for help at approximately 6:30 p.m. after Gordon was three hours overdue to return.

The Coast Guard notified SCPD and a police helicopter responded and located the watercraft floating in the water with no occupant at approximately 6:55 p.m. Just five minutes later, Police Officers Michael Malone and Shawn Mooney, aboard Marine Delta, discovered Gordon approximately 1⁄4 mile away from the disabled vessel.

Gordon, 60, thanked our officers, but he can also thank his good decisions prior to getting into the water. Wearing a life jacket and telling someone where he would be and for how long undoubtedly led this to a happy ending.
