Joseph Scalafani, 34, from Mastic Beach, pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree for the execution-style killing of 32-year-old Alex Smith. The murder occurred on May 20, 2023, when Scalafani ambushed Smith outside a bar, shooting him multiple times, including twice in the head. Scalafani's brother, Daniel, and friend, Jeffrey Mercury, both pleaded guilty to Hindering Prosecution for aiding his escape from New York after the shooting. They provided Scalafani with money and transportation, lying to law enforcement about his whereabouts. Scalafani was arrested in Florida on June 4, 2023, and extradited back to New York. He is expected to be sentenced to 20 years to life in prison on November 12, 2024. The case was prosecuted by the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and investigated by the Homicide Squad of the Suffolk County Police Department.
