Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that Charles Weiss and Marvin Sandoval were arrested for allegedly violating the Evergreen Law by dumping a significant amount of construction and household debris in a protected area of the Long Island Central Pine Barrens on November 6, 2024. The defendants reportedly loaded a U-Haul truck with refuse and disposed of it in a remote wooded area rather than disposing of it properly after being hired for a cleanup job.
The illegal dumping was reported by two civilian witnesses who alerted law enforcement, leading to an investigation by multiple agencies. The Evergreen Initiative was introduced in December 2023 to combat illegal dumping, increasing fines for violators and incentivizing public reporting. Under the amended Suffolk County Code, fines can reach up to $15,000 for individuals and $25,000 for corporations.
The Pine Barrens is an ecologically significant area that plays a crucial role in Long Island's drinking water supply and provides habitat for wildlife. Both Weiss and Sandoval were arraigned on November 27, 2024, and are scheduled to return to court on January 8, 2024. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
