A Suffolk County employee, Brianna Hassett, has been arrested for allegedly accepting bribes and falsifying government documents while working at the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs. The 33-year-old is accused of accepting cash in exchange for providing answers to licensing examinations and falsifying insurance information for Home Improvement license applications. She was arrested alongside Esteban Bermudez, who is not a county employee.
Hassett faces multiple charges, including two counts of Bribe Receiving, one count of Falsifying Business Records, one count of Offering a False Instrument for Filing, and one count of Official Misconduct. If convicted, she could face 3.5 to 7 years in prison. Hassett was released without bail, pending further court appearances, while Bermudez's arraignment is scheduled for March 5, 2025. The case highlights a breach of public trust, according to Suffolk County officials, who emphasized their commitment to addressing corruption in government.
