On May 9, 2025, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that James Brown, 45, of Mastic, was convicted after a jury trial of second-degree murder and related charges for the fatal shooting of his friend, Umar Elquhir, in November 2023. Brown, a previously convicted felon, shot Elquhir multiple times outside Brown’s home following an altercation. Surveillance footage showed Brown firing approximately nine shots into Elquhir’s car, with evidence linking Brown to the crime scene through a palm print. Brown claims he acted in self-defense. He faces up to 40 years to life in prison at sentencing on June 16, 2025. The case was prosecuted by ADA Eric S. Aboulafia, and the investigation involved Suffolk County Police. Brown was previously convicted of assault in 2012.
