BELLPORT MAN SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR MURDER

Shati Smith, a 31-year-old from Bellport, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder and firearm charges for shooting and killing 28-year-old Lee Houpe in June 2022. Smith shot Houpe multiple times in a driveway, then fled the scene to Virginia, but was later captured and extradited. The jury found Smith guilty in May 2025, and he was sentenced in June 2025. The case was prosecuted by Suffolk County prosecutors, and the investigation was conducted by the Suffolk County Police.
