The truth is Suffolk County Police Officers have exceeded standards in their activation of body cameras. Thousands upon thousands of police interactions were recorded giving the public unprecedented transparency into how we police.
In some cases, it is completely appropriate and/or required to restrict the use of body cameras. These include things like sex crimes, bathroom breaks and other sensitive situations.
We must balance transparency with factors such as the victim’s rights, personal privacy and officer safety. Most critical to consider is officer safety. We just saw an NYPD officer murdered and a Suffolk County Officer nearly murdered. Policing does not occur on a movie set and staying alive takes precedent over staying camera ready." -Lou Civello, Suffolk PBA President
