An 80-year-old woman from North Dakota was scammed into mailing $8,500 in cash to scammers posing as her granddaughter, who claimed she was involved in a car accident and needed bail money. After realizing she was victimized, the woman contacted authorities, who tracked the package to Shirley, New York. Law enforcement, with the help of postal inspectors, intercepted the package and recovered the money, returning it to the victim. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office warns residents to be cautious, verify identities before sending money, and avoid sharing personal or financial information over the phone to prevent similar scams.
