Richard L. Wolffe, Jr., a 39-year-old from Bay Shore, has been indicted on multiple counts of possessing child sexual abuse material. Following a tip in August 2022, law enforcement executed a search warrant at his home on July 27, 2023, discovering over 5,000 images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, some as young as infants. Wolffe was arrested on August 23, 2023, and arraigned on November 14, 2024, facing 20 counts of Possession of a Sexual Performance by a Child.
Due to current New York State law, these charges are non-bail eligible, leading to Wolffe's release on supervised release without bail. If convicted, he could face 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Joseph Mallek, and the investigation was carried out by the Suffolk County Police Department's Digital Forensics Unit. District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney criticized the law that prevents bail for individuals charged with these offenses, emphasizing the seriousness of the crimes involved. Wolffe is scheduled to appear in court again on December 20, 2024.
