Dec 05, 2024

On December 2, 2024, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney announced the positive outcomes of the Retail Protection Partnership, initiated in October 2023 to combat rising shoplifting rates. This program fosters collaboration between local merchants and law enforcement to target repeat offenders, aiming to reduce retail theft and its impact on businesses and communities.

Despite a nationwide increase in retail theft over the last several years, Suffolk County has observed a slight decline in reported incidents since the program's launch. The partnership facilitates information sharing and expedites the prosecution of habitual shoplifters. Prosecutors have successfully implemented strategies like aggregating multiple misdemeanor thefts into felony charges and issuing Trespass Notices to deter recidivism.

As a result of these efforts, many repeat offenders have received significant prison sentences, reflecting a commitment to holding thieves accountable and protecting local businesses. The DA's office has seen success in prosecuting a number of top offenders, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Retail Protection Partnership model in counteracting organized retail crime.

Key retailers involved in this initiative include Target, CVS, Home Depot, and Walgreens, among others. The partnership highlights a community-focused approach to enhancing safety and reducing theft, encouraging other retailers to join the collaborative effort.
