Ny’s Public Safety Priorities Need To Change Immediately
Dec 16, 2024

The article discusses New Yorkers' ongoing concerns about crime and public safety, particularly in light of recent criminal justice reforms perceived as ineffective. According to a Siena Poll, many believe crime has worsened over the past year. The case of Daniel Penny, who was acquitted after being charged by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, highlights frustrations with Bragg's prosecutorial priorities and perceived failures to uphold public safety.

In response to these concerns, Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay has proposed a constitutional amendment (A.9334) that would allow voters to recall district attorneys who do not fulfill their duties. This proposal was inspired by a successful recall of San Francisco's District Attorney Chesa Boudin due to his lenient approach to crime. Barclay emphasizes the need to reassess recent criminal justice changes, including bail reform and the parole system, advocating for policies that prioritize community safety over political agendas.

He calls for legislators to restore accountability and empower citizens to hold elected officials responsible for their actions, asserting that current policies undermine public safety and contribute to increasing crime rates.
