Tavion Elting, an 18-year-old from East Patchogue, has been indicted on felony weapons charges after a brawl at Smith Haven Mall during Black Friday shopping on November 29, 2024. During the fight, a loaded 9 mm pistol fell from his pocket, leading to bystanders kicking the weapon away and securing it until police arrived. Witnesses recorded the incident, allowing authorities to identify and arrest Elting.
He was initially arraigned on November 30, with bail set significantly lower than requested by the District Attorney’s Office. On December 20, he was indicted on charges including Criminal Possession of a Weapon and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. Elting's next court appearance is scheduled for January 13, 2025, and he is represented by attorney John Halvorsen. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys from the Violent Criminal Enterprises Bureau.
