Gary Cowell, a 72-year-old man from Patchogue, pleaded guilty to charges involving the dismemberment and concealment of Yvette Leonard's body after her overdose. Leonard, 56, had been missing since June 13, 2024, and Cowell was the last person to see her alive. Following investigations, he confessed to dismembering her body out of panic after her overdose and disposed of her remains in three locations throughout Patchogue. Law enforcement recovered the tools he used for dismemberment as well as the scattered remains. Cowell pleaded guilty to Unlawful Concealment of a Human Corpse and Tampering with Physical Evidence, both Class E felonies, and faces a potential prison sentence of 1 1/3 to 4 years. The case is being handled by the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
