Cuomo doubles down on bail reform during NYC mayor’s race: ‘Righted a terrible social wrong’
Mar 10, 2025

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo expressed support for the state's bail reforms during a campaign event at a Harlem church, stating that they "righted a terrible social wrong" by preventing individuals from being jailed pre-trial simply due to their inability to pay bail. He acknowledged concerns about judicial discretion in the reforms but claimed they had been addressed, allowing judges and prosecutors to use their judgment in applying the law.

Cuomo, who is running for mayor against incumbent Eric Adams, emphasized the need for increased police presence, proposing the hiring of 5,000 additional NYPD officers, in contrast to some city officials advocating for police cuts. He criticized this stance as an extreme populist move.

Additionally, Cuomo warned that former President Trump might interfere in New York politics but expressed confidence in his ability to handle such challenges. Meanwhile, current Mayor Adams faces a competitive reelection bid, with former Republican Governor George Pataki criticizing Cuomo's leadership and past actions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pataki argued that electing Cuomo would be a mistake given his history and lack of accountability.
