The NAPO (National Association of Police Organizations) has expressed strong support for the inclusion of key tax provisions in the One, Big Beautiful Bill Act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on May 22. The provisions supported by NAPO include the elimination of taxes on overtime pay, an increase in the SALT (state and local tax) deduction cap, and the end of de minimis treatment for low-value commercial shipments.

NAPO President Mick McHale highlighted that these measures are crucial for the financial security of law enforcement officers and public safety. The act proposes to exempt overtime pay from taxable income for individuals earning less than $160,000 annually, aiding in the recruitment and retention of officers in understaffed agencies.

Increasing the SALT deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000 for individuals earning under $500,000 is also seen as beneficial for homeowners and first responders, as it allows for greater community investment in public safety. Additionally, by addressing the de minimis treatment of low-value shipments, the bill aims to curb the influx of fentanyl and other narcotics, thereby protecting families and communities.

NAPO expressed gratitude to President Trump for his ongoing support of law enforcement.
