The Civilian Police Academy (CPA) is a recognized educational program designed to strengthen the relationship between Suffolk County residents and the police. It offers 48 hours of training over 16 weekly sessions, each lasting three hours in the evening. Topics covered include arrest laws, search and seizure, use of force, traffic enforcement, domestic violence, narcotics, homicide investigations, K-9 units, and bias crimes. Participants can also ride along with officers or attend demonstrations at police facilities.
Open to Suffolk County residents aged 21 and older—especially those in leadership roles—the program is free. Interested individuals can apply by submitting an application along with a valid photo ID.
