Too often in New York today, serial offenders aren’t facing swift and sure consequences from prosecutors and the courts. A rough July in which crime kept increasing and alarming new data on rising recidivism rates released this week by the NYPD confirm that. But contrary to the simplistic and overly ideological conversation that guides too much talk in this arena, overhauling the state’s bail statute to insert a “dangerousness” standard is not some magic-bullet solution to that problem.
