Last week, New York City experienced a surge in violence that raised public safety concerns. A man wielding knives allegedly killed three strangers in separate attacks in Manhattan, while another man with a gun robbed a bodega and a smoke shop before being shot by police. These incidents intensified fears that the city’s criminal justice reforms, aimed at reducing incarceration, have left dangerous gaps.

Under governors Andrew Cuomo and Kathy Hochul, New York's legislature drastically altered its criminal justice system, such as eliminating cash bail for misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies and easing parole practices. These changes resulted in a significant decrease in jail and prison populations but raised questions about public safety, especially regarding individuals likely to repeat violent behaviors.
