Albany’s getting set to sock New York with yet MORE pro-criminal laws that’ll make us even LESS safe
Mar 31, 2025

In this statement by Ray Tierney, the Suffolk County district attorney, he expresses deep concerns about two proposed bills in Albany: the Elder Parole Bill and the Fair and Timely Parole Act. He argues that these bills would undermine public safety by allowing convicted murderers and violent offenders to gain early parole.

The Elder Parole Bill is designed to allow inmates over 55 who have served at least 15 years to plead for parole. Tierney highlights the case of Colin Ferguson, who was convicted of a mass shooting in 1993, emphasizing that age should not diminish the severity of his crimes. He argues that bringing victims' families into parole hearings every two years would only cause them additional trauma.

The Fair and Timely Parole Act is criticized for prioritizing a convicted person's current behavior over their past actions, which could lead to dangerous offenders being released. Tierney points to the case of Michael Valva, an ex-NYPD officer who murdered his son, asserting that a focus on rehabilitation should not overshadow the severity of such heinous acts.

Tierney believes that justice requires a clear distinction between individuals deserving of rehabilitation and those who have committed unforgivable crimes. He warns that these bills would worsen the already shaky safety situation in New York, exacerbated by previous criminal justice reforms that have led to increased violence and fear in communities. He urges New Yorkers to actively oppose these bills to ensure public safety and honor the victims of violent crimes.
